Have you ever wondered what would happen if I lied about graduating from college? I grew up in a small town, and everybody seemed to know everybody’s business. When we all graduated high school, it was all about who was going to go to college, who was going to graduate, and who among us, was going to make something “special” of themselves. Most of their friends, their parents, and sad to say, even my parents, didn’t think that “special” person was going to be me.
After high school, I actually moved down south to work at a local lumber year; not anybody’s idea of fancy living! The work was hard, the shifts were tough, and the pay was poor. BUT THAT WAS LIFE… for me.
Years later, I returned home and a few buddies of mine – buddies form high school – asked what I did with my life. After hearing their stories about going to college, graduating, and getting a diploma, and having a cozy office job, being married, with lovely children; I figured my life needed a little bit of a boost. I just had this random thought — ‘lie!’ Lie about having a diploma! So what? What’s the worst that can happen? So what if I lied about graduating from college?
So, I did. I told them I took some time off after high school, but eventually took some college classes at the local community college, then went off to a University, gradated, and got a diploma. As they all said, Congratulations… I sat there, feeling like a piece of scum.
I left my friends after visiting home that weekend, thinking I would never see any of them again.
Then, six years later, one of my old high school buddies ends up in my southern town. I met him at a bar and later that night, we went back to my place, to hang out some more and have a few beers. Turns out, his corporate job had transferred him down my way!
That night, he asked me how I was doing… what was the latest. He even brought up that story of mine about getting a degree and asked he looked around my place, hoping to see some sort of certificate hanging on the wall, he politely asked, “Dude, where is your diploma?”
I never got one. I never had a diploma. I never graduated. I never even attended. I lied.
I seriously never somebody who was going to graduate college.
BUT I had to think of something fast. I told him that I had lost my diploma. BUT immediately, he told me to call around and try to get a copy made. I was lost for ideas.
LUCKILY THERE WAS A SOLUTION!
I had found out about a website online that sold fake diplomas. They were actually sold as replacement diplomas, but I was able to buy one. I remember picking up the type of diploma that I wanted, giving the company my name as the student name, the date of graduation I wanted to written on it, the degree, etc. The diploma was 100% custom made and featured all of my details. It was shipped to me in no time and I ran to the framing company that day, purchased a nice frame for it, hung it up and invited my friend back to see my again.
I showed him the diploma… he was impressed. He sat there smiling. He couldn’t believe that ME, some loser kid from nowhere actually did ammount to something special. He was surprised. He congradualted me.
Knowing that I had to come clean, I told him the truth… that I had lied about having a degree and that I never got a diploma. He still thought the concept of that online store was really cool, to see authentic looking novelty diploma documents that were so realistic.
